Today marks the start of annual 10-day “Bike Week at Daytona Beach,” and the beach, streets and bars will be clogged with the riotous revelries of some of the hardest-partying men and women on the planet.
Except for a brief hiatus during World War II, Bike Week and motorcycle racing have been going on in various permutations in and around Daytona Beach each year since 1937. Whether you’re a tourist eager to get in on the action or a local trying to stay far from the maddening crowds, it’s a sure bet that you’ll run into plenty of denim- and leather-clad bikers ready to have a good time.
Below are a few tips to make sure that everyone has a safe Bike Week 2017 experience.
— If you’re in a passenger car or commercial truck, be aware of the massive presence of two-wheeled cyclists. They’re out there. It’s up to you not to mow them down.
— If you’re riding your big two-wheeler, obey the rules of the road and state and city laws. When the traffic lights turn from red to green, wait a beat to make sure that no cars are attempting to beat the light.
— Wear helmets that meet Department of Transportation compliance standards on every trip. Guys seeking female companionship should carry an extra helmet to offer the ladies as head protection when they climb on the back of your bike.
— Wear your safety gear while riding. Yes, you’re at the beach, but there’s nothing attractive about road rash. Make sure you wear closed-toe boots, eye protection, highly visible roadware with padding over vulnerable body parts.
— Make sure that your motorcycle is in tip-top shape before setting out. If it doesn’t already have it from the factory, invest in reflective stripping for your bike to make it extra visible at night or in inclement weather.
— Use your taillights and headlights at dusk and when it rains.
— Don’t ride motorcycles after you’ve been drinking.
If you get injured in a motorcycle crash during Bike Week, a Florida personal injury attorney can assist you with filing a claim for damages.
